Notes on event

At 16.45 hours on 23 Jan 1945 the Vigsnes (Master Haakon Tronstad), dispersed from convoy MH-1 on that day, was hit on the starboard side by a torpedo from U-1172 off Anglesey. The torpedo struck at #1 hatch, blew up the forward hatches, wrecked the radio and caused the ship to sink in 15 minutes. 17 survivors abandoned ship in one lifeboat and subsequently rescued the remaining survivors from rafts. The lifeboat made landfall about seven hours later at Lynas Point Cove near Anglesey.
