Personal information
Leo Riviera was one of three brothers working aboard Lady Hawkins. They abandoned ship in the same lifeboat, but his brother Austin died of exposure on 21 January 1942. His eldest brother Orville and he were rescued and taken to Puerto Rico, spent the next six weeks in and out of a hospital, recuperating and awaiting transportation. Another US ship then took them to St. Lucia, where they were to transfer to Lady Nelson, one of the sister ships of Lady Hawkins, for the journey home to Barbados. However, the ship was sunk at anchor in Port Castries, St. Lucia by U-161 on 22 March 1942. They were then taken to Trinadad and flown home.
