Eric G. Shannon joined the Merchant Navy at the outbreak of war and signed on his first freighter, Trevalgan, on 3 Nov, 1939. He survived the sinking of Cockaponset and last served on the Dutch steam merchant Blommersdijk. Returning to Vancouver by bus after being discharged in New York City, he shortly thereafter joined the Canadian Army and participated in many battles in the Normandy campaign.
