Personal information
Harold Carl Newman was one of the sonar operators aboard USS Fiske and was with the commanding officer when the torpedo struck, fracturing his tibia. He was then in the water for quite a while, ending up with kidney damage from the force of depth charges going off while he was in the water. After recovery he served aboard USS Slater until the end of the war.
