Personal information
Jack Pierce later told his son that his bunk was where the torpedo struck USS Laramie, but he couldn’t sleep that night and was walking the deck when general quarters was sounded. Jack was part way up a ladder to his gun station when the torpedo hit knocking him off the ladder where he landed on the steel deck plates which injured him enough for a medical discharge. He had seizures and back problems until the day he passed, but refused to ask the VA for anything as he said that he was only doing his job.
