Alwyn Alfred Payne had served on the rock of Gibraltar and been on corvettes before joining HMS Eagle and surviving her sinking. He later told his daughter that he was the last up from his hold and slid down the side of the ship. Alwyn swam as far away as possible and waited one and a half hours in the water before being picked up, spending the trip in the boat that rescued him next to a dead man.
