Personal information
John Wharton joined the Merchant Navy in 1922 as cabin boy and his first ship at sea was the Jervis Bay on her maiden voyage. He first met his wife while awaiting completion of Empire Byron in Sunderland. John continued to work for J. & C. Harrison Ltd after the war and retired from the sea in 1965.
