Personal information
George Oscar Billing joined HMS Nabob berthed in Brooklyn, New York, in March 1943. After the escort carrier had been torpedoed he was appointed to pay off the ship in a dry dock at Rosyth by the Admiralty. This procedure was supervised by a Captain sent from Chatham, who returned after all the documentation was complete and left him to finally tidy up and leave for Chatham two hours later. George was therefore the last of the crew members to leave their ship in September 1944. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1969.
