Personal information
Augustine J. Stapleton, of Placentia Bay, Newfoundland was in the lifeboat in charge of the chief officer after the sinking of Suecia. The other survivors were unanimous of the opinion that they owed their lives to the experience and courage of Augustine, who nursed the boat during a gale of 48 hours until he collapsed from exhaustion after being 20 hours at the helm.
