Personal information
David Thomas Charles Spargo served aboard Port Gisborne as first ship after joining the Merchant Navy and was on his third voyage with her when the ship was sunk in October 1940. He was on watch in the engine room when the torpedo hit and could see the forward portion of the ship drifting away when he eventually reached the deck to abandon ship. After the sinking he was kept in hospital in Greenock for three weeks before returning to duty on the Port Jackson in January 41. He continued in the Merchant Navy until 1947.
