| History | Completed in June 1913 as Rononia (GY 865) for Pelham Steam Fishing Co Ltd, Grimsby. 1913 sold to Walter M. Olney, Cleveleys (FD 88). In June 1915 requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to the M/S trawler HMS Rononia (FY 1594). 1919 returned to Neva Steam Trawling Co Ltd, Fleetwood. 1924 sold to J.N. & H. Bacon, Grimsby (GY 134). 1930 sold to Kottingham Trawling Co, Grimsby (GY 935). | ||
| Notes on event | At 23.06 hours on 6 March 1942 the unescorted Rononia (Skipper Henry Shakespeare Ford) was hit on port side amidships by one G7e torpedo from U-701 about 200 miles south-east of Iceland. The U-boat had followed the trawler for about twelve hours before attacking on the surface at night as the Germans suspected her to be an anti-submarine trawler. They observed how the vessel broke in two and sank immediately after two detonations, apparently her boiler exploded a few seconds after the torpedo had struck the engine room. | ||
