Notes on event | At 13.25 hours on 8 Aug 1942 the Kaimoku and Anneberg in station #73 and #64 of convoy SC-94 were torpedoed by U-379, which was herself lost after the attack. The Kaimoku (Master Theodore Henry Cunningham) was hit by two torpedoes amidships. The first torpedo caused the ship to shudder and the second sent flames and oil over the mast, killing the second assistant engineer and a fireman on watch below and two armed guards. The vessel settled rapidly and sank within four minutes. The survivors among the eight officers, 28 crewmen and 14 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 4in, four .50cal and four .30cal guns) abandoned ship in one lifeboat and two rafts. They were picked up within 45 minutes by the Canadian corvette HMCS Battleford (K 165) and landed at Gourock. | ||
