| Notes on event | At 06.29 hours on 27 August 1942, U-511 fired a spread of four torpedoes at convoy TAW-15 about 120 miles south-southeast of Guantanamo and claimed two ships with 17,000 grt sunk and another damaged. The San Fabian and Rotterdam were sunk and the Esso Aruba was damaged. 23 crew members and three gunners from the San Fabian (Master Lionel Guy Emmott) were lost. The master, 29 crew members and three gunners were picked up by USS SC-522 and landed at Guantanamo Bay. They were brought to Charleston, South Carolina by the American motor merchant Nonsuco, arriving on 15 September. | ||
