History | HrMs Witte de With (Lt.Cdr. Pieter Schotel) took part in the Battle of the Java Sea but was ordered to escort the damaged British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter to Soerabaja. She was damaged by a Japanese bomb hitting the fo'c'scle on 1 March 1942 and scuttled the next day along with HrMs Banckert and USS Stewart to prevent her capture by the Japanese.
