Descripton: This book tells of the sinking of the 2,200-ton ferry Caribou off the coast of Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland on 14 October, 1942, by U-69 (Oblt. Ulrich Gräf, commanding). The Caribou was hit dead amidships by one torpedo and sank in position 47.19N 59.28W at 0322 local time (0622Z). Of the 237 passengers and crew (civilian, British, Canadian and U.S. servicemen), 101 survived. |
