Hi JD,
To scuttle is the intentional destruction and sinking of a vessel by it's own crew to prevent it from falling into the enemy's hands. This just for definition before you sit down and write a movie script. Perhaps you better pose your question on the movie forum, before blessing us with another stinker like 'U571'.
If you want to show the Cdr and Navigator of the boat as total morons, you are on the right track with your conceptional idea.
