Actually, I was reminded of the case of the U-??? (forget the number) in WWI.
Like many a U-boat in the days before depth charges, they rested during the night on the shallow floor of the North Sea, with only one crewman on watch. Apparently he fell asleep or passed out, and the whole crew died of chlorine posioning.
Eventually (months later) a slow air leak into the ballast tanks uprooted the sub from the ocean floor, and it washed up on the English shore.
Or so I remember.
Do you recall that story?
