the RSM Macalle' crew got poisoned because of her leaking methil-clorine air refrigeration system and ran aground in the Red Sea. Also some crewmen from "Perla" and "Archimede" died the same way. (http://www.regiamarina.it/marrosso.htm)
The potassium cartridges of the re-breather escape gear were effective only against carbon di-oxide.
