Hi All,

Each new U-boat was tested as to its optimum “silent running” speed. I don’t know if any of that data survived the war but it might have. I also don’t know if it would constitute its “acoustic signature” but the new boat had to pass back and forth at different speeds by an island (name escapes me for the moment but I could look it up if necessary) where special listening devices were installed for this purpose. It was a standard part of the process of getting a new boat qualified as a front boat. I suppose the test would have had to be repeated after major overhaul too. I discovered this while researching U-126.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
