Snorkels

How long did it take to get a snorkel below the surface? I should think not more than 5 seconds, time enough to kill the Diesels and start a shallow dive. Were there any depth limits on folding down the snorkel assembly? I presume there must have been both speed and depth limits with deploying and retracting the folding snorkel design. The telescoping snorkels must have been more flexible in this regard.
