Hi Ludovic,
500 liters of water is not all enough and should not have been able to flood the aft battery compartment just forward of the the engine room bilge, since it is separated by a solid bulkhead on types VIIc. Much more water and something else must have contributed to that accident. Perhaps, someone forgot to close the valve in time for diving instead????
Clearing exhaust ducts??? Please explain, when creating backpressure on the exhaust line it is very difficult to get the Diesels started!
