Fuel Tank Construction

U-boats often left an oil slick behind when they dove after being attacked with depth charges by aircraft. It seems a slick was left behind even in cases where no damage was done to the boat. Were fuel tanks open to the sea such that a small amount of oil would be forced out by a depth charge exploding nearby? Thanks, Jerry
