The U.S. Fleet boat had a similar arrrangement, but used flood valves at the bottom
of the tanks.

scroll down to chapter 16, "Fuel and Lubricating Oil Systems". page 163. You wiil
find a diagram of this fuel oil system which is serviced by the compensating system

This chapter also shows the "Sharples" purifier and its operation.
