Another thought about launching a glide bomb at a destroyer at midnight..........
The destroyer would be "rigged for red" and "blacked out. " No
lights topside. Also it would be near impossible for the bombadier to see the destroyer due to the smoke screens in the area. The USS MEREDITH had a fan-shaped "nozzle" mounted on centerline between the two depth charge stowage racks on the
fantail. The smoke generator was installed in a compartment just below the nozzle and used atomized diesel fuel to create its smoke.
A U-boat or E-boat would have the same visibility problems if
torpedoes were to be launched at midnight.
I guess I'll have to opt for a mine as the culprit, but I'm not sure if it was an acoustic type or what.
