Pam,
I'm increasingly coming to the view that the origin of this and the other fantastical WWI U-boat stories (U 28/sea monster, UB 85/sea monster, U 28/sunk by truck, UB 65 ghost, UB 20 loss details) is British, not German. And specifically, Lowell Thomas and/or R.S. Gwatkin-Williams.
Consider the recent discussion of U 28's loss and the role a truck may have played in the loss. The origin of that part of the story is almost certainly Gwatkin-Williams.
Thomas added the bizarre details to his theory of UB 20's loss...
