Staff at the IWM cover a vast range of subjects and I doubt that many of them are experts on U-boat warfare (No disrespect to them is intended)
Perhaps a photograph posted here might elict some further information as most of the people who visit this site are, to say the least, specialists in their chosen field.
Do not just give up. It is, after all, Naval history and so many things have just been cast aside & then lost for ever.
