Yes, `U977` is an extraordinary tale of an epic underwater voyage. The point must be made, in this context, however, that there was and is no evidence of any sort so far as I know that any Nazi leader sailed on her, though there were plenty of allegations at the time. As far as I remember the author wrote a preface explaining that he was writing the book so soon after the event specifically to scotch these myths.
I am curious though as to whether there are in fact any proven instances of high-rankers leaving or attempting to leave the ailing Fatherland by U-boat.
Gaylord Kelshall is the West Indian author of `The U-boat War in the Caribbean`, and an amazingly authoritative book it is too; well worth trying to find a copy if you`re interested in aspects of U-boat warfare other than the usual Atlantic convoy patrols. I found a s/h copy a while back via abe.books - worth a look there if you`re interested.
