Computers at Bletchley

<HTML>The \"mechanical method of trial and error\" which I referred to was called a \"bombe\" and it was a primitive electromechanical computer. It was the use of this method, instead of the classical pencil and paper which resulted in timely information. However, the bombes were useless without knowing how the Enigma rotors were wired since the rotors in the bombes had to be wired the same way.

Bletchly developed a much more sophisticated electronic computer around 1944 which was used to crack another German ciphering system used for teletype. This machine was called Colossus and was dismantled after the war. Colossus was the first real computer used by the Allies. The Germans also had programmable computers, but they were not used for cryptography. The distinct lack of support for the work of Konrad Zuse was another major error of the Nazi regime.
