<HTML>Hi Torlef,
I feel the same way as you. I don’t know much about why the museum or the American government allowed U-505 to get in the shape it is in though. Perhaps just being exposed to 20 million visitors over the years has taken its toll inside but that would not have caused the hull to deteriorate. That had to be caused by neglect.
On the other hand, money talks and that is the only thing that will work whether it comes from us or the government. Everybody looses if U-505 is allowed to fall apart, not just Americans. I have not seen U-534 or U-997 (or U-505 for that matter) but I understand the governments of England and Germany have done nothing to preserve those U-boats either. Lets face it, our governments don’t care about them. Only those of us that do are going to make a difference. In the case of U-505 at least funds are being collected to restore her. Admittedly, we have no real guarantee that she will be properly restored even if enough money is collected (the Red Cross and other charities here recently collected a huge amount of money that was donated specifically for the victims of the 911 terrorist attacks and then decided to spend it on other things. They had to be shamed into actually spending it on the victims and they still haven’t done it) and who knows what will happen to the money donated if not enough is collected to do the job, but donating to the fund would seem to be our only practical choice if U-505 is to be saved.
We can try to convince the government to do it too but I am not convinced that the majority of tax-paying Americans, Germans, or Brits want their tax dollars spent on the project. They will loose too if U-505 isn’t saved but they don’t necessarily see it that way.
In the end, right or wrong, it all boils down to money and it is probably going to be left to those of us who care to supply it.
Regards,
