<HTML>Hi All,

Here is some good news for a change. It seems U-505 has a chance after all. Here is what has happened so far (as of 01/04/2002):

In 1996 the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry began an evaluation of the U-505 and determined that the U-boat must be protected from the elements she has been exposed to since 1954. This evaluation lead to the Museum committing a goal of $23.5 million to move the U-505 to an indoor location that will ensure the U-boat is protected from the elements, execute a proper conservation, add new interpretive exhibitory to tell the whole story of U-505 and her relation to WW2 and establish an endowment for the submarine's continued maintenance.

The New U-505 Experience is the largest commitment ever made by the Museum to one of its artifacts and the institution is extremely excited about the plans for protecting this one of a kind, world-class artifact.

To date, over $19.5 million has been raised for the U-505. Government support is currently at $11.75 million which does include a gift from the federal government of $3 million (seems I owe my government an apology &#8211; they do care). Private donations from individuals, corporations and foundations have combined for $7.75 million. The Museum expects to be finished with fund raising in 2002.

The project continues to move forward on a daily basis and all Museum staff leadership as well as contractors hired to work on the project are in place.

During the past year and a half, the Museum has conducted a full structural survey of the U-505 to access not only the feasibility of moving an nearly 900 ton object, but also prepare the U-boat for its move. In addition, work has been completed regarding the final location, 2.5 stories below ground on the northeast corner of the Museum. The Museum did also discuss the possibility of temporarily covering the U-505 while work was being completed; however, engineering surveyors deemed this course of action unnecessary as Museum stayed on target with planning for The New U-505 Experience.

The Museum is on schedule for the completion of The New U-505 Experience. Final exhibit design drawings are nearing completion for the design of the enclosure for the submarine, as well as the exhibit itself. The Museum is now beginning the solicitation of bids for the construction of the enclosure which will begin in the Summer of 2002. Simultaneously, the Museum will also being completing structural restoration on the U-505 in 2002 in preparation for the move of the U-boat. The enclosure is scheduled to be complete in the Spring of 2003 and the U-505 will be moved during the second half of 2003. Exhibits will be installed in the first half of 2004 and The New U-505 Experience will open to the public during the weekend of June 4-6,
2004 in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the U-505's capture and D-Day. Later in 2004, the Museum will celebrate the exhibit's 50th Anniversary.

Those of you who are interested in the preservation of the U-505 may be interested to know that the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry are recognizing all donors of $500 and above on permanent plaquing in the new exhibit. Multi-year pledges are accepted and they will be happy to send out information to anyone who is interested. In addition, if anyone is interested in physically helping with the project please contact Kristin Clark at the museum. Her e-mail address as well as where to send your donations can be found at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry website at

Here is an opportunity to make a real contribution to history and the memory of all of those who fought the Battle of the Atlantic. Let&#8217;s help preserve U-505 for future generations. Check things out for yourself then let your conscience be your guide. I am sure donations of any size will be appreciated. Here is a chance to actually do something. Money talks!

Regards,

Ken Dunn</HTML>
