Is there any possibility that this could be one of the "Monsoon" boats, u-Boats that were based in Penang, Malaya, during the Japanese occupation? I live not far from Penang, but will have no chance to go there for some time. Check this site out for a history of the Monsoon boats - I haven't yet, but it's a thought.
