<HTML>It is certain that the Surcouf joined the Allies. It liberated the first territory from the Vichy in the war when it liberated two small islands France still holds in North America. It did this sailing from Portsmouth USA while the US was still Neutral. It raised a bit of a stink.
It is likely that the Surcouf was at least damaged, if not sunk by the Thompson Lykes. The accident happened at the position the Surcouf should have been and no other boats reported a collision. The next day, an American patrol bomber reported sinking a sub on the surface.
I do not believe that the Surcouf was working for the Germans, but the rumors were very prevailant. Could the Surcouf have been tarred with the actions of a different French boat?</HTML>
