<HTML>Hi MPC, kpp, Rainer and James,
Really an interesting topic and an interesting discussion!
I knew before that Heydrich used to serve in the Kriegsmarine, however, I don¡¯t know any details of his naval career. Regarding the reason why he was expelled, the version I heard was that he had an affair with the wife of a senior officer (but I may confuse wife and daughter on this issue) and such scandal could not be tolerated.
It¡¯s new to me that he sincerely loved his naval occupation. I have read before that Heydrich only loved two things in his life: women and antiques--no mention of the Kriegsmarine.
As to whether or not he would have become a good naval officer, it¡¯s really hard to say. One thing is sure: he is an intelligent guy who¡¯s quite competent and efficient with his ¡°work¡±. Moreover, he seemed to possess another quality that is required of u-boat commanders: courage. Heydrich liked to drive his car alone in those occupied areas regardless of the warnings of potential danger. If he was not so ¡°courageous¡±, he might have not died so early.
It¡¯s a pity that Heydrich had used his qualities in the wrong way. As there used to be a statement that the Art School that refused to admit Hitler should be partly responsible for WWII, similarly, I doubt whether the Kriegsmarine should also be partly responsible for what Heydrich had done later.
Have fun,
Ying
