For the submarine torpedomechaniker there was the Mechanikersmaat and promotion to Obermechanikersmaat.that is Petty Officer. That was it. If they were to be promoted to the Meister level which compares to ChiefPettyOficer thea had to leave the UBoat, and go to Destroyers or Cruisers, or become the FlottillenMechanikersMeister ashore or become an Instructor. Very few ever became Officers, and if so could only go to the SpecialBranch Duty as Torpedoffizier. I think the USNavy called them LDO limited duty officer. Only very very few ever became Line Officers. The only ones with a path to the Officers world were MaschinenChiefs who could become LI or the Obersteuermann who could relatively easy switch over to the Line Officers branch.
