<HTML>Hello Craig:
The refineries were not on the \"coast\". They were well up river in places such as Baton Rouge, Bay Town, and Port Arthur. In the northeast, Esso had a large refinery in Everett MA, many miles from the pilot station. Sites in New Jersey were also tucked in behind Staten Island, no way accessible to roving submarines.
Incidentally, about 10 years ago, the \"Nippon Gruppe\", which is that loosely organized collection of Germans who were in Japan during WWII, in connection with its annual reunion that year in Bremerhaven, organized a bus trip to Cuxhaven.
All that we did was walk around the HAPAG building on the pier and then go to lunch. They must have known about Bredow, but, for some reason the museum was not on the itinerary. Now you tell me there is a room there dedicated to the raiders!
I enjoyed your accounts. That telephone situation is indeed a problem. One can, however, find coin-activated units, but only in railway stations and airports.
Cordially.
