<HTML>I agree that refineries are dangerous places. with your inside knowledge, you could set the place alite with a few hundred pounds of explosives.
But if you were banging away at one from several miles offshore, from an rolling U-boat (a surfaced sub is one of the worst seaborne gun platforms ever to sail the seven seas) at night, on an unfamiliar site, you would probably not hit anything serious. Every square inch of a refinery is not a tinderbox. There are roads, railroad yards, fields, nonvital equipment, etc. etc. Because of their volatility, surely they are built with damage control in mind: valves that can shut off fuel flow, firebreaks between facilities and storage tanks, etc.
All the while the U-boat is hanging out there, outgunned (note the above correspondance on the U-boat attack on Aruba) and totally vulnerable - a hit virtually anywhere on a U-boat by artillery would be fatal to its ability to sail back across the Atlantic and make France.
