Dear Herr Kummrow,
Thank you very much for the obituary notice from Spiegel. Your confidence in my ability to translate it well is very flattering, but may be misplaced
; however, I can say that this notice speaks very respectfully of Buchheim's lifelong achievements in the field of art collection, as well as of his own art and, of course, his writing. Ministerpresident Stoiber expressed his sympathy to Frau Buchheim thus: "The news of your husband's death, coming so shortly after his birthday, left me deeply shaken. My wife joins me in sending you heartfelt sympathy." (Hope that's a passable translation!) Burial will be private.
I wonder if he'll be buried in Feldafing? It seems likely, doesn't it, as that's where he spent most of his life?
Although I haven't yet seen the award-winning film, I cheered out loud when the winner was announced! Hollywood hasn't been very welcoming to German films in the past, despite the excellence of some of the entries (Das Boot, of course, but also Der Untergang and the recent movie about Sophie Scholl).
