Yes, indeed they did often with great courage and bravery winning quite a few medals in their so doing.
Indeed, the first act of valour to be awarded the Victoria Cross was by an Irishman, a Mate (later Rear Admiral) Charles Davis Lucas who was born in Drumargole, Amargh on 19.2.1834
BUT - Perfidious Albion! A phrase not used for many a long year :-))
"Perfidious Albion" is a hostile epithet for England or the United Kingdom: perfidious signifies one who does not keep his faith or word, while Albion is an ancient name for Great Britain.
The use of the adjective "perfidious" to describe Britain has a long history; instances have been found as far back as the 13th century.
