Hi Jason, in the book 'The U-boat' by Roessler, on page 200 of U 235 and one on page 201 there is a picture of U 889, which shows a similar pipes passing under her upper winter Garden, which is a connector pipe for the schnokel, which is in these cases positioned at the front side of the conning tower. Looking at the picture you have provided, the pipe fitting running down the side of the conning tower looks very similar to the schnorkel size on U 889. So I wonder if with the extra winter Garden, they needed an extension pipe. regards john
