Hi Guys' after further reading, in Stern's book 'The Type VII U-boats, on page 110 there is a picture of the U 744 at her demise, she clearly shows the pipe, as does the U 977 on pae 126, shown at Argentina. With the U 977 picture, the pipe as been raised from the deck at the distal end, by a metre or so. However a deck diagram on page 44, shows a pipe in the position in question and is indicated as being a ventilation trunk. Regards john
