Excellent picture Ken. Though when I saw it was at an angle and not horizontal, I got a bit worried ( as the pipe I've added to my model is horizontal ) though a quick look back at the pics of the U-260 showed that it was horizontal there as well, thankfully!
That pic pretty much shows it's a standalone, water-tight container. You'd imagine it's for something in either wintergarden ( based on it's position, you'd guess the lower one, but maybe the conning tower isn't wide enough to take the container higher up so it could be either winter garden really ). As you said, there were already pressure hatches for ammo etc., so spare barrels seems to be the likely answer, though we may never know.
But thanks a lot for the picture, it's very handy!
