Dear Mark,

Thanks (again).

This is what I have so far:

"Soon after VE Day, it was decided that U-505 should be sent on two War Bond Tours to raise funds for the war against Japan. The submarine was exhibited along the East Coast and the Gulf Coast throughout the remainder of 1945 in a drive to sell War Bonds".

"USS Eunice (PCE 846) was chosen to be the escort for the first one.
US Navy Submarine officers and crew took over U-505, and the War Bond Tour of the East Coast started in Norfolk and then went to Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, spending 5 days in each and where spectators could go aboard in exchange for purchasing war bonds. U-505 was then escorted to Portsmouth".

"On 1 August USS Neunzer (DE-150) sailed to New London, Connecticut, to escort U-505 on it's second War Bond Tour, this time to the Gulf".

You will however note the lack of precise dates, which is one of the reasons for my query.

In fact, what I now intend to do is to get a friend of mine to "pull" (and copy) the Deck Logs for USS Eunice andd USS Neunzer from NARA, though of course it would be best (and save a lot of wasted time) if I could define the date periods that apply.

As an aside, as far as other War Bond Tours are concerned, yes, both U-530 and U-977 undertook one each after they arrived from Argentina, the details being as follows:

"In November, U-530 took part in a victory tour of various US ports in Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. It travelled on the surface throughout the tour, and was escorted by the destroyer USS Thomas, visiting Port Arthur in Texas on 11 November".

"U-977 was then moved to the Groton Submarine Base at New London from where, between then(?) and 8 December, it took part in a 3-week publicity tour of US east coast ports in company with the destroyer USS Baker, before being sailed to the Portsmouth Navy Yard".

There are therfore 2 more Deck Logs that I need to review (USS Baker and USS Thomas), but at least I am a bit more sure of the dates for U-530 and U-977.

It is however very strange that there is so much uncertainty surrounding the exact facts of all these Tours - but I am determined (or at least hoping) that - with all the help I can get - I can come up with the whole story ere long.

Yours aye

Derek
