It seems from your comments that you know German, so it is peculiar that they didn\'t teach it to you as part of a language lesson - we had to learn how to read and write it in the 1970s - it has much to do with a cultural identity thing, not so much with politics, but it tends to make life difficult, because ALL pre-1914 university-level books were written in Gothic, which makes them very hard on the eyes to read - although I must admit that each page of Mommsen\'s \"History of Rome\" is a work of art - it was taught at school, and as Mr Showell has pointed out in his book on U-boat crews, all Kriegsmarine candidates had to complete their application letters using this script, otherwise Roman script was current then as now.
