<HTML>Hi Walter,
Leaving aside the Princes/Princesses and Dukes/Duchesses of the Blood Royal,
There are Dukes, Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts and Barons in that order.
A knighthood, whereby the receipent uses the title \"Sir\" is not a member of the aristocracy. (The boss of my firm was recently knighted and is now Sir William but, he is no more of the aristocracy than I am - he just earns more!)
In Germany there is/was Großherzog, Herzog, Burggraf, Graf, Freiherr and perhaps some I dont know about.
Again Freiherr or Baron is the lowest and does not equate with Earl. I believe that either can be used in forms of address.
\"Titles and Forms of Address\" ISBN 0-7136-3132-5 might be of some interest to you. It covers all forms of addressing people in the UK.
Regards
