I always presumed Buchheim simply wanted to point out that destroyer had the radar (unknown to the Germans), "saw" the sub periscope and attacked. After ordering the crash dive, the KL words were "How the hell they could have spotted us?"
Anyway, since the action takes places in 1941 and few warships had a radar capable of spotting a periscope, I am somewhat doubious.
