recently I saw the "Director's cut".
During the night attack nearby Gibraltar the KL had other priorities than commenting on his opponent's radar. He got his navigation officer badly wounded in the chest, the conning tower hit and a crash dive under destroyers shelling to perform.
Buchheim wanted to stress once again that the happy times were over and his countyfellows-at-sea did not know why. No comment about radar is done in the whole movie picture.
