<HTML> First off guys radar didn't spot the periscope. If anyone did it was the british by sight because they got close enough to see it. I doubt they could spot a periscope on radar even today unless they were really close. I doubt it though. First off there were two radars built small enough that they were put on naval vessels. One came out early in the war and this radar was really only good(I'm assuming the Brits were about equal to U.S technology) for bad weather considering in good weather with good visibility you spot them before your radar does. If memory serves U-96(in the movie which in part is historically inaccurate with some of the events) was trying to intercept a convoy. They spot a ship which turns out to be your friendly neighborhood tin can. The weather wasn't too great if I remember correctly. Visibility is down. Regardless of the weather( supposedly heavy seas might knock down the range a little bit)If the u-boat could see the destroyer the destroyer could at least see them on thier primitive radar despite the smaller radar signature of a U-boat. So having spotted the U-boat on radar briefly they were on thier way. No matter how fast the U-boat goes under water for the time it takes to intercept they aren't moving very far. Why didn't they mention radar in Das Boot? Oh that is easy they wanted the movie to be as close to authentic as possible. 1941 was the threshold of the technological revolution of the war. The U-boot waffe didn't get their cheesy(they weren't much good for anything except getting a fix on something that is within visual range) radars until 42 ish. It was a war, there is a certain unknown both sides faced when engaging each other as the years past. The early radar that most likely was the source of headache for Jurgen and co was nothing compared to the bad ass radar that came out in 43 which coincidentally was responsible for an alarming 43 u-boat losses in May of 43.</HTML>
