<HTML>One of the "psychological" experiments on Triton's submerged circumnavigation in 1960 was a "sealed ship" period when there would be no air replenishment through the snorkel and smoking would be prohibited. It was said to be a "tense" period for all concerned, and there was a 10-day maximum allowed. The supply officer, who was in on it, laid in a lot of extra candy and gum. (He was, at the time, the only supply corps officer serving in submarines--something else that's changed since 1960.) In this case, mind you, the primary purpose of the experiment was to see how long Triton could function on recycled air--banning smoking was just to make it easier on the system by eliminating the smoke and combustion byproducts.
