I have the book you mention, "Der Film, Das Boot," and there is no mention of that particular sound cue, so presumably when Buchheim hears gravel thrown at a metallic object, it goes "Ping!" and not "pop pop pop click thump pop bang bang bang" as it does to me. Perhaps my ears need adjusting.

One COULD drink water , if the beer runs out. Hate to say it, but there is that possibility.

Interesting that the feminists have taken over; I didn't notice that on any of my visits or in conversation with German (female) friends. But then, I wouldn't wish to be like so many vacationing visitors to the US, who come away "experts" on American culture! so, I will take your word for it and say "Hurrah for Germany!"
