<HTML>Hi Io, hi Robert,
very interessting the actors you take into consiteration. Henreid and Veit no to bad the idea (a little bit cynic, the idea that they would play germans fighting for Hitler, while they themslves were immigrants by that time).
But what do you think about Max von Sydow? He wouldn't be bad as "Der Alte": because he has a very "ruhige Art" to act, he isn't what's called a "beau" and he has a aura of respect.
Io: Fuchsberger is to much a beau and Harald Schmidt (you mean really our "dirty Harry" of the Harald-Schmidt-Schow?!?) he's to long for an U-Boat... 2 meters Harald jumping thru the "Zentrale-Kugelschott?! Let me see this! And he is also much to "unruhig" for the character he would have to play. But he would be able to express a real good amer cynism as the Alte.
All in all I'd prefer Max von Sydow.
Best regards
